Contextual discovery – the new search

Interesting concept floated by Google’s Marissa Mayer at Le Web last week: contextual discovery. That’s the ability to get results without actually searching.

Location services, accessed through mobile devices are increasingly serving relevant information to users, without them needing to explicitly search for it.

Image-based searching too, on services such as google goggles is another means of contextual discovery.

It’s all part of the way that the cloud is becoming layered over and through our physical environment.

On top of this, new interfaces are creating new ways of organising, categorising and accessing the information contained in the cloud.

It’s all leading to what I like to call “relevant reality” – a world in which connected devices add real value to our daily lives
